Belonging: The Dynamics of Bonding, Bridging, and Linking
It’s only natural that we gravitate towards forming, nurturing, and sustaining bonds with individuals who resemble us, as this inclination towards belonging is deeply rooted in our adaptive and survival instincts. Discovering like-minded individuals who share commonalities can undoubtedly contribute significantly to our sense of fulfillment and overall well-being.
Nevertheless, as previously emphasized, diversifying our social relationships by engaging with those beyond our immediate circle or different power statuses within the community holds great potential for enhancing both personal satisfaction and the overall health of our communities. In essence, we become the vital bridges and links that connect disparate groups and individuals within our community fabric. For instance, forging connections with older generations or volunteering as mentors can offer immeasurable enrichment, further strengthening the tapestry of belonging and interconnection within our communities.
