Relationship with Nature
Relationship with Nature – A reflection
Today we honour our relationship with nature.
Our relationship with nature is a heavily contested one. At this point, the
environmental imperative is clear and poignant. Our modern relationship with nature flirts with guilt and shame; that is not helpful.
The answers to solving the climate crisis and feeling better about our relationship with nature lie in purifying our relationship with nature. Nature holds the answers to many of our current conundrums. Thus, they are available to all if we give it enough of ourselves. If we observe, learn from, enjoy, smell, and connect all our senses and vital force to it.
As we prioritize strengthening our connection with nature, we’ll soon discover that nature is abundant and forgiving. It always allows us to try again. More importantly, it helps us heal. Biophilia is a concept some are familiar with; essentially, it is the confirmation that we will always feel better whenever we immerse our senses into the natural environment, its systems, and patterns. Nature has the power to heal us. Furthermore, once we heal, we can reciprocate that healing effectively.
We can love nature profoundly, openly communicate it, and infect everyone with that love and that opportunity for connection. If we replace anthropocentric thinking with biocentric understandings, we recognize that there is no separation between nature and us. We are merely another expression of it. Loving nature is loving ourselves.
Old philosophers such as Marsilio Ficino thought it essential to spend a portion of the day immersing ourselves in nature. It was part of his secrets to a good life. Besides, it is never too late if we have never cared for a plant or nature. There are also myriad opportunities to connect with nature meaningfully in ways that easily fit your lifestyle and interests. Consequently, practices we can adopt are surprisingly accessible.
Naturally, as we begin connecting with nature, we might experience some failures. However, as we start understanding how nature works, we will be able to take care of it through experimentation successfully and gain a better understanding of ourselves.
For example, nature doesn’t follow our modern schedules. It follows cycles. Let’s consciously move and live in cycles, natural cycles.
That’s one of nature’s most fantastic reminders.
