Relationship with Waste – A reflection

It is only a waste if we let it be.

Have you ever found a past object that took you back on memory lane and dropped you off safely in the present with a key to your future at hand? At Embracce, we believe that nothing is truly a waste of time and energy. Everything in our life always presents us with something worthwhile to move forward. It is only a waste if we let it be, so reclaiming and cultivating a healthy relationship with our physical, mental, and emotional waste is essential.

Even when we think something was a waste of time or resources, it might just be that some cycle is still in motion, and this ‘thing’ that we find wasteful today is crucial in a larger process — a vital ingredient of a complex recipe that we’ve yet to discover. Nonetheless, our job is to reimagine and manage our physical, mental, and emotional residue. We will continue to produce residues for the rest of our lives, so it is helpful to learn to appreciate the practice of re-examining our production and disposal processes and cycles.

The silver lining of waste.

Sometimes, relationships don’t work, and that’s okay. The memories and the moments shared are of great value. They gave us joy, laughter, comfort, and, more importantly, new lessons and parameters to move forward. Everything can be re-purposed if we do the due diligence to dig in, manage our residue, and discover what is still valuable. Dealing with our residue reminds us to be intentional about our choices. Still, if you can’t find anything useful, check again. You might be surprised by what lies in the dark depths of our waste.

Somebody else’s treasure.

One fantastic way in which we human beings recycle our ‘waste’ is in the form of storytelling. We create new life from ‘nothingness,’ from the floating imagination, memory, and perspectives that otherwise are ‘not useful’ until they are. Just as storytelling is impactful, so is re-purposing and finding new value in the residue. Thus, the things we release with gratitude can become somebody else’s treasures.

We are residual beings, yet we don’t like dealing with our residue because it takes additional energy. But doesn’t it take more energy to carry around from place to place? We will always have something to clean up because we are messy. Let’s learn to appreciate the process of re-examining what is no longer useful and finding new nuggets of gold to move forward.

Let’s reassess our relationship waste. Ultimately, we never know who the treasure is for.
