The Need for Community
- How can we balance our need for independence with our need for connection?
- How can we foster a greater sense of mutuality with those around us?
We are all connected; there is no separation.
As social species on planet Earth, our interdependence and connection to each other is eminent.
As I write these words, I remember a song I grew up listening to called ‘Ningun hombre es una Isla’ (No man is an island) by Pablo Molina, inspired by John Donne’s famous poem published in the 1600s.
Here is the famous fragment from the poem “MEDITATION XVII,” also known as “NO MAN IS AN ISLAND,” from Devotions upon Emergent Occasions by John Donne, 1624:
“No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
